Zone Diet

The Zone diet is another quick weight loss diet made popular by celebrities such as actress Jennifer Aniston. The Zone diet was created by Dr. Barry Sears from his book The Zone.  According to Dr. Sears the Zone is a metabolic state in which the mind is relaxed and focused and the body is at its peak. A person has also reached the Zone when he or she has achieved permanent body fat loss and optimal health. Dr. Sears also claims that living in the Zone can also prevent heart disease, diabetes, depression, cancer and can slow the aging process. This can all be achieved by following the Zone diet.

According to Dr. Sears, food should be treated like a medical prescription or drug. When food is not taken properly or eaten in the right combination the body creates too much insulin, which can lead to weight gain. This can be corrected when food is consumed in the right proportion of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The Zone diet treats food like a prescription that needs to be taken at prescribed times and in specific quantities of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Foods high in the glycemic index such as grains, pasta, fruit juices, pasta, starchy vegetables, and bread are not prohibited but allowed in limited amounts. The diet averages between 850-1,700 calories per day.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to the Zone diet. Unlike other high protein, low carbohydrate diets the Zone diet recommends lean proteins and minimizes the intake of saturated fats. The Zone diet also recommends a higher consumption of carbohydrates in comparison to other low carbohydrate diets. However, it is also a low calorie diet that depends on a person entering ketosis or a fasting state in order to achieve rapid weight loss. In this view, it is like other high protein, low calorie diets in that it is designed to provide short term weight loss and is not sustainable over the long term.

The science behind Dr. Sears claims is also incorrect and unproven. Many medical experts believe that Dr. Sears oversimplifies a complicated physiological process about the relationship between diet and insulin that is not supported by current nutrition and biochemistry knowledge. The science behind the Zone diet relies upon unproven claims based on case histories, testimonial, and uncontrolled studies that are not published in pure reviewed journals. Dr. Sears's claims about the benefits derived from the Zone diet have also not been substantiated by any other medical expert or organization.

The Zone diet is perhaps the best choice among other high protein, low carbohydrate diets. However, it still uses incorrect science to disguise a low calorie diet. The best method to follow to permanently lose weight and maintain it over the long term is to follow a well balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats along with exercising at least 3 times a week. This method may not be fast and it doesn't sound sexy, but it's the most proven and healthy method to follow that is recommended by health and fitness experts.
