The first step toward choosing a gym is to identify your personal fitness goals. For example, are you looking to increase cardiovascular health or focus on strength training? Once you have identified your personal fitness goals you can better asses which gym is going to provide you with the means to reach those goals. If you are unsure of your fitness goals, there is the option of joining an all-purpose gym.

Location is the next important factor in choosing a gym. You will likely want to find a gym relatively close in proximity to where you live. A nearby location will be easier to access without the burdens of heavy traffic. Having your gym nearby will motivate you to use it regularly. Being too far away often can be used as an excuse to stay inside, not utilizing your gym membership.

Once you have located a few nearby gyms, the next step is to research them. You can research most gyms on the Internet or by asking friends or family members who may have memberships. You also can call the facility and ask to speak with a staff member. Most gyms have a staff designated to help new and potential members. The staff member will likely schedule a time for you to visit and will give you a tour of the gym.

There are several factors to keep in mind when visiting a gym. Study the equipment. Check to see what equipment is available and how well it is maintained. You should be choosing a gym which will provide a variety of equipment, giving you a well-balanced workout depending on your fitness goals. For example, do you need more cardiovascular or strength-training equipment? It also is important to pay attention to the openness of the equipment; how long will you have to wait before using it?

Another important factor in choosing a gym is accessibility. Find out the gym's hours of operation and decide whether these hours fit into your schedule. Find out if the gym offers exercises classes and, if so, determine what kind and what time they are available. Also, learn whether the gym provides secure and well-maintained showers and locker rooms.

When choosing a gym, make sure the staff is professionally certified. Depending on your personal needs, it may be a good idea to check if the gym provides a staff of personal trainers, massage therapists or nutritional consultants. Also, try talking to the staff to see if they are both helpful and friendly.

Another important factor to investigate when choosing a gym is membership costs and additional fees. Review the contract, noting the length of the agreement, initial fees, billing cycles and cancellation policies. Find out if using the pool or enrolling in exercise classes requires additional fees.

Before you sign the contract, work out in the gym. Most gyms offer free passes for potential members. The entire gym facility should be clean, safe, well-maintained and welcoming.

If everything checks out to your satisfaction, go ahead and sign up. Stay dedicated and focused and you will find joining a gym is one of the best investments you can make.
