The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is the latest bestselling diet embraced by the American public. The South Beach Diet is a weight loss plan written by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agaston in his book entitled The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss. Dr. Agaston originally developed the diet for his chronically overweight heart patients. He then used his findings to create a general version of the diet to be followed by the average person.

The South Beach diet consists of 3 phases. Phase 1 is the most restrictive and lasts 2 weeks. Phase 1 requires the elimination of fruit, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugar, alcohol, and baked goods. Only meat, chicken, turkey, eggs, vegetables, cheese, nuts, and salad veggies are allowed to be consumed. The purpose of Phase 1 is to eliminate all cravings for unhealthy foods that contribute to fat storage. The largest amount of weight is lost during Phase 1 mainly due to the severe restriction of carbohydrates.

Phase 2 and 3 are generally the same. Phase 2 allows the consumption of some of the foods on the restricted list from Phase 1: Bread, pasta, potatoes, cereal, rice, and fruit. The foods picked to be added are chosen by the individual. The key to Phase 2 is to add these foods back in moderation. Phase 2 ends when the individual following the diet reached their weight loss goal. Phase 3 is the least restrictive and is about maintaining the new South Beach Diet.

The South Beach Diet claims to not be a low carb diet, but in reality it is. The diet encourages the consumption of what is considered right carbs and right fats: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, lean meat, and fish. It also limits the amount of whole grains to be consumed and restricts certain fruits and vegetables such as bananas, watermelon, and potatoes. However, the diet does promote healthier fats to prevent the risk of heart disease.

Some health professionals also considered the diet to be unhealthy because it promotes such rapid weight loss during the Phase 1 period. Most health professionals do not recommend losing more than 1-2 lbs. per week. Rapid weight loss can force the body into a fasting state called ketosis which causes the body to burn muscle tissue instead of fat. The South Beach Diet also doesn't mention exercise which is also needed to keep the body strong and aids in maintaining weight loss. Overall, the first 2 Phases of the South Beach Diet is not considered healthy, but the foods recommended in Phase 3 are generally what most health professionals recommend consuming.
